Starting a New Lawn | Important Considerations for Soil and Seed

Most landscape architects recommend 6 inches of compacted good quality organic topsoil, they also have specifications for the manufacture of topsoil.

Seeding a New Lawn

Depending on the quality of soil used, temperature and moisture levels germination can take as little as two weeks. The key is the quality of the soil; organic content and pH.

Landscape architects recommend that grass seed be applied during the periods May 15 to June 15 and August 15 to September 15 in Nova Scotia. Water is necessary and a light watering is best done in the early evening.

For sod the season is much longer and can generally be done when temperatures permit the topsoil to be evenly placed. During the summer watering is a must to ensure proper root development.
