At EARTHCO We Manufacture & Process What We Sell
(Except for winter road salt)
WE MANUFACTURE TWO TYPES OF MULCH – BARK MULCH AND COLOURED MULCH
- BARK MULCH - We have two options for our customers, Premium Double Grind Bark and Commercial Double Grind Bark. We also offer single grind for each grade of bark.
- DOUBLE GRIND BARK
- Our Premium Double Grind Bark Mulch is recognized for its fine texture and dark colour. We are the primary purchaser of raw bark from the local big board sawmill that have large logs which minimizes the amount of wood residue when the bark is stripped. We then process the bark by grinding it and turning it 5 or 6 times over 1 to 2 years to ensure it is mature and very dark.
- Our Commercial Bark Mulch is sourced from stud mills. Most of our competitors sell this bark. We offer this bark as some customers simply buy based on price. This bark undergoes the same process as our Premium Double Grind Bark Mulch but because stud mills have small trees there is considerably more wood residue than in our Premium Bark Mulch. Some suppliers also offer a Natural Mulch.
- SINGLE GRIND BARK
- Our Single Grind Bark Mulch has larger pieces of bark, generally between 2 to 6 inches in length with bark fines and a dark colour. It is processed the same way as our other bark mulch.
- Benefits of Bark Mulch:
- Bark mulch is 100% bark from the sawmills.
- Bark mulch has a lower pH than natural mulch.
- Weeds tend not to like the lower pH.
- Landscape architects recommend using only bark mulch because of the lower pH.
- Natural Mulch: Some suppliers offer Natural Mulch as a substitute for bark mulch. Natural Mulch is a mixture of ground or partially decomposed wood and other additives. Landscape architects do not recommend Natural Mulch.
- Colour Enhanced Mulch: As a manufacturer, Earthco strives to ensure our coloured mulch is the best. We make it the way it is supposed to be made by grinding wood. If you look at pictures of coloured mulch, you will see that there are pieces of wood approximately 1 to 2 inches long and ¼ to ½ inch wide along with fines. This is what ground wood mulch looks like. The reason we use ground wood is because the mulch tends to mesh and generally resists wash out in rainstorms.
- At Earthco we use kiln dried lumber and clean (unpainted) pallets for our ground wood. These materials are very dry and they absorb the dyes much better than coloured wood chips.
- Wood chips are small, light, have very few fines and tend to wash out in rainstorms. Earthco does not use wood chips in our manufacturing process.
- Our black mulch is made with a charcoal pigment and red using an iron oxide pigment. All are environmentally friendly, naturally occurring elements.
- Important things to consider before ordering your coloured mulch:
- Coloured mulch requires one to two good days to dry, depending on the mulch depth, to avoid fading and wash-out. Sunny days with wind are the best for drying.
- Avoid placing your mulch if rain is forecasted within 48 hours.
- If you have coloured mulch that has not been spread, cover it with a tarp until the weather improves.
